header/footer question

#1

Post by Bronwyn Shone » Mon Mar 15, 2004 11:34 am

Hi Mike,

For certain letters, we want to have both a running header and a running footer, but when I include both, I get error messages and problems.

For our client letters for example, we have a heading (which includes a running header) that I merge into letters for clients. The heading includes the running header, the date, addressee, and other case-specific information. In client letters, I merge our letterhead and this form. It looks like this:

>
>

This has been working fine.

Letter 1, the client-specific heading, includes the running header. It looks like this:
___________________________________
>
{{BeginHeaderFooter1
>>
>
Page -[[##]]
EndHeaderFooter1}}>

>

RE: Employee: >>
Employer: >
D/Injury: >
Claim Number: >
WCAB Number: >

>
_____________________________________

This too is working fine. It displays the running header on pages 2 and above, just as we want it to.

The problem is that now we want to put a running footer on all pages that will have a little letter we use to code our letters and make filing easier for our file clerk. I've been using the following:

_______________________________________
{{{END}}}

>
{{BeginHeaderFooter4
C
EndHeaderFooter4}}
_______________________________________
The letter C denotes "correspondence."

When I put this code in the end of individual documents, I get the following error message:

tx4ole
Invalid Property
value. (1 -1e05)

then I click OK and get a pink dialog that says

General Error
Message OLE 1 Dispatch exception
code 0 from tx4ole: the specific case is
field identifier

Program FRMEDITALAWDOC.
HEADERFOOTER
Line No. 44

When I hit close, the letter displays, but the running header which is supposed to start on page 2, shows up on page 1. The footer shows up as it is supposed to.

I'm sure I just need to change some of the headerfooterdefine numbers, but I'm not sure what to change them to.

Suggestions?

I tried cutting and pasting your text:

_______________________________________
{{{END}}}

>
{{BeginHeaderFooter4
C
EndHeaderFooter4}}
_______________________________________

into a letter and everything seems to work just fine. You may want to try erasing the text from {{{END}}} to the end of the header/footer and retyping it and see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise, perhaps you could Email me a sample of the letter so that I can try and duplicate the error here.

Thanks,
MIke

Dear Michael,

I need your help on a coding issue.

We are currently merging the following footer in quite a few of our documents:

>{{BeginHeaderFooter4
Law Offices of
> -[[##]]-
EndHeaderFooter4}}

Now, I'm trying to incorporate a header with the following code:

>{{BeginHeaderFooter1
>
>>
Page [[##]] EndHeaderFooter1}}

1. Now if I wanted this to print only on pages 2 and above, I'd change the setting to headerfooterdefine 2, correct?

2. When I try to put the header + footer together in the same page and attempt to print --> I get the same error message as in the previous post from Bronwyn Shone.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated!

THANKS!

A bit more testing:

Code:

>{{BeginHeaderFooter1
>
>>
Page [[##]]
EndHeaderFooter1 }}
>{{BeginHeaderFooter4
Law Offices of
> -[[##]]-
EndHeaderFooter4}}

Note: there's a space between the EndHeaderFooter1 & }}

Becomes after error messages (A1 + Pink):
May 2, 2007
Joe Tester
Page
EndHeaderFooter1 }}
{{BeginHeaderFooter4
Law Offices of
Lerner, Moore, Silva, Cunningham & Rubel -[[##]]-
EndHeaderFooter4}}

...But...

Remove that previously mentioned space between the EndHeaderFooter1 & }} and the following prints(after error messages):

May 2, 2007
Joe Tester
Page

...that's it... hmm...

Hi Michael - per the help files, headerfooterdefine is used only once in the form letter. You then add the numbers together depending on whether you want to use 1, 2, 4, 8 or a combination.

Per your question:

1. Now if I wanted this to print only on pages 2 and above, I'd change the setting to headerfooterdefine 2, correct?

Not really. What you would want to do is set up a Special Header and the normal header as well. Then the special header shows on page one and you can just leave it blank (so as to not show anything on the header on page one). You may easily view the headers/footers in Page Mode. Edit a letter and try putting this code at the bottom. After printing it so it displays on the screen, put it in Page mode and as you add information (even on the printed form) you will see headers on each page. You can easily type Control-Enter to force a new page. Here's the code:

>

{{BeginHeaderFooter1
ABC Law Offices
Hello - I'm on all pages after page 1
You can view me and the special header in PAGE mode
by clicking the dropdown NORMAL/PAGE in the upper right corner
EndHeaderFooter1}}

{{BeginHeaderFooter2
I'm special and I go on the first page only - Blank line here if you dont want me on the first page
EndHeaderFooter2}}

By the way - A1-Law also now has full integration with Word and Corel Word Perfect with headers and footers.

Dear Michael,

If I wanted both:
1. A Footer "botom of page" on Each page.
2. A Header "top of page" Only on the 2nd page & higher (not the first page)

1st page:
.
. (body)
.
Footer

2nd page & above
Header
.
. (body)
.
Footer

...etc.

Would the code provided work? Or would I need something different?

Thanks again!

Hi Michael - from the help files we have:

1. Inserts a header.
2. Inserts a special header for the first page only.
4. Inserts a footer.
8. Inserts a special footer for the first page only.

You indicated that you want:
A Footer "botom of page" on Each page.
A Header "top of page" Only on the 2nd page & higher (not the first page)

Therefore, you want #4 and you want #1 but you must also have #2 but just make #2 header blank (special header). Therefore, you want 1, 2, and 4 which is 1+2+4 = 7 or in other words:

>

Let me know if you have any questions about that.

Dear Michael,

Thanks for the information! After working on the code came up with:

>{{BeginHeaderFooter1
>
>>
Page [[##]] EndHeaderFooter1}}{{BeginHeaderFooter2

EndHeaderFooter2}}{{BeginHeaderFooter4
Law Offices of
> -[[##]]-
EndHeaderFooter4}}

Coding it this way with the same formatting (all the same in regards to placement of where line beings/ends, tabs, etc.) works perfectly.

It gets tricky when you try to have headers/footers with different formatting since in A1 it "picks up" the format of the last line.

For example I tried to have the HeaderFooter4 with different formatting from HeaderFooter1, but the last line of HeaderFooter1 (the page #) picks up that format.

More testing to follow...

Hi Michael - I'm glad you seem to have everything figured out. However, I think you should also take a look at form letter 10627 and see how A1-Law integrates with Microsoft Word and/or Word Perfect. A lot of offices use both A1-Law and Corel or Word. Many use Corel or Word for dictation (but A1-Law fills in the letterhead, headers, footers, caption, date, client, closing, etc.).

Dear Michael,

Thanks for the information. This will help us to standardize the coding in our Word letters. Plus I can see having MS Office becoming an office-wide standard in the next year or so.

Thanks again!
