Envelopes - Printing

Re: Envelopes- Another Issue
Dear Michael,
On the systems that can print envelopes properly, On the return address (tab), the bin is either blank or system. When you click on the Print (button), the preview shows you an envelope.
On the systems that cannot print envelopes properly, the preview shows you a regular letter size paper. I have tried going to the bin dropdown and changing the setting to Envelope Bin or System, to no avail. The Preview still show you a letter size document.
Suggestions?
In regards to IP vs LPR Ports:
The way I see it is If the Print Driver is like your mail carrier with a big bag of documents and the physical printer is the mailbox, the Ports work like roads.
The Standard IP Port is a Windows Port that sends the document to a specific Printer on the system with a network card. So if you have a printer on the system with an IP of 192.168.2.2, you would create a Standard IP Port with that same IP.
The LPR Port is a Unix Port for Windows that works the same way and I was told that the LPR Port has the same functionality and is more stable than the IP Port. However, it seems to confuse A1 Law - some letters print out at 400% size and envelopes print out at 2pt - Somehow on the LPR road the documents are getting mangled.
Add a TCP/IP Port: Start-Settings-Printers-Alt-Click a Printer-Properties-Ports Tab. If you click on the "Add a Port" button - Standard TCP/IP Port
Add Ability to Add LPR Ports:
Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components - Other Network File and Print Services - "Print Services for Unix".
Add a LPR Port:
Start-Settings-Printers-Alt-Click a Printer-Properties-Ports Tab. If you click on the "Add a Port" button - LPR Port
Hope this helps!

Re: Envelopes- Another Issue
I think where I was confused was that you said this:
Our photocopier representatives suggested creating and using a lp (LPR) port rather than a standard IP Port. I found the lp (LPR) port doesn't work for A1 Law. After changing the port to a standard IP Port, envelopes came out properly as the right size. The Canon Driver works (5e 5.1) and the Canon 2800 works.
So, in the first line you said they suggested using an IP (LPR) rather than a standard port. Then you said that you changed it to a standard and it did work. So, I was not sure which one worked, the standard or the IP (LPR).
With regards to the Envelope problem on the two computers, if they have the SAME bin selection at the return address tab as the other two workstations, then the only other thing it could be would be the printer driver that is currently selected for those two computers.
Hope that helps,
Mike

Re: Envelopes- Another Issue
Dear Michael,
Ahh... I understand now. There are two different ports, the Standard TCP/IP and the LPR Port.
The Standard TCP/IP Port is the one that worked.
In regards to the Envelope Issue:
>
The situation is that the problem occurs BEFORE you choose the printer driver.
>
These situations occur BEFORE you choose the printer driver. AT the Preview (correct or incorrect) THEN you click on the mini-print icon and select which Printer driver you want to use.
So I'm having trouble getting the correct A1 Envelope Preview. It is showing up properly on a few machines (as an envelope) and incorrectly on the rest (as letter size preview).
If I get the correct A1 Envelope Preview, everything else works.
Verrry confusing. I have attempted to reload the WRK 3.0 file as a fix and also as a reinstallation. Neither made any difference.
Sincerely,
Michael Lerner

1. >The situation is that the problem occurs BEFORE you choose the printer driver.
Answer - The Bin Selection dropdown is using the default printer driver. So, they should not need to select a different printer. If they are selecting a different printer when they click the printer icon - then they may need to click Properties. If they use different printers for printing and envelopes let me know as I may need to add a feature to automatically select a different printer when they print envelopes.

Re: Envelopes- Another Issue
Dear Michael,
Ahhh. You are correct. The Preview determines its setting from the Default Driver.
The problem that we have is that the most commonly used default driver is set to automatically use paper from specific drawers rather than "Auto" (the program deciding). This is because our legal documents need the 1st page to come out on bond paper and the rest on copy paper.
If the default driver is the "1st page bond" driver, then the envelope preview comes out incorrectly.
If I go to Printers - and use any driver with an "Auto" paper setting as my default, and then go back into A1 Law - Envelopes - The Preview and subsequently, the printing occurs properly.
Thank you for your help on this issue. It has been bothering me for the last 2 weeks.

Select a different printer driver to preview from and use? Or maybe be able to designate a driver to use? Hmm....
Thanks again!!!

Re: Envelopes- Another Issue
Dear Michael,
The tale gets a bit more convoluted... Please Ignore what I said about paper settings because I don't think they have any effect on the final outcome... I'll explain in a moment.
I understand now what you mean by the following:
>
I think this would work perfectly for our office.
We have Exactly the forementioned situation. We have 2 copiers on the Workers' Compensation side: a Canon 5000 (no Envelope feeder) and a Canon 2800 (Envelope feeder).
The Envelope preview works off of the default driver. If the default driver is ANY driver we have set up for the Canon 2800 with the envelope feeder (regardless of the paper settings) - the A1 program finds the Envelope drawer and creates the correct Preview and then prints out correctly.
If the default driver is ANY driver set up for the Canon 5000... the A1 program can't find an envelope drawer... and becomes confused in the Preview (showing a letter rather than an envelope)... so that EVEN if we choose a 2800 driver later in the "Print using this driver" step - it still doesn't print on envelope because it didn't find one previously in the Preview (of the 5000 driver).
*Whew* Selecting a different driver when you print envelopes would help us tremendously. Otherwise most of the office will have to go into Printer defaults, and select a 2800 driver as the default printer before they even start to attempt to print envelopes in A1.
Thanks again and again!

Re: Envelopes- Another Issue
Dear Michael,
>
Well, I checked again, and paper settings DO have an effect on the final outcome
If you try to print to a 2800 driver set to print to specific drawers, the print job will wait for you at the Printer to tell it which drawer you want to print to.
So there are 2 steps to successfully printing an envelope in our office:
1. The Default Driver must be one pointing to the Canon 2800 (with the Envelope Feeder)
2. When you get to the step where you Select a Driver to Print to, the Driver Slected must be for the Canon 2800 AND with Paper Selection either set to "Auto" or "Envelope Bin/Tray"
